Most Norwegians don't speak French. And wine and spirits can only be bought in specialized stores owned by the government (just like the Swedish "Systembolaget", Norway has "Vinmonopolet" - which quite simply translates to "The Wine Monopoly").
Most of these stores are build in such a way that the customer is disallowed from walking between the shelves and looking at the bottles. Quite the opposite; one must stand in line and wait until one of the store's employees is ready to serve you, and then one must politely ask for "Gewürztraminer" or "Pouilly Fumé". This of course makes it even harder for wines with difficult names to reach a greater audience, as customers don't want to make fools of themselves and fail to pronounce the names of the products they are looking for.
In 2002, the 4th most popular wine in Norway was the "J.P. Chenet Cabernet Syrah" (there was sold a total of 938.000 litres of this particular wine). To the Norwegian, even this name is hard to pronounce correctly. So why this success, then?
Because of the shape of the bottle (http://www.rusimport.ru/images/Chenet%20image_30.jpg). Any Norwegian can say: "I want two bottles with swinging necks, please".

I just saw the official sales numbers for 2004: The "J.P. Chenet Cabernet-Syrah 2002" is now Norway's most popular wine, with sales totalling to 1.694.000 litres last year.
The most popular Italian wine was "Boheme" (964.000 litres), a name that can easily be pronounced by a Norwegian.
The most popular Spanish wine was "Amigo" (516.000 litres), and you've guessed it: It's easily pronounced, too.
The entire top 500 list (red and white wine) can be found here: http://www.vinmonopolet.no/statistikk/2004/13%20Hele%20aret/bestselgere_vin_2004.htm
